Dear Families,
Thank you for all of your support and well wishes as we’ve transitioned back to in person learning. We especially appreciate the all staff lunch on Wednesday that many of you supported. Overall, we had a very smooth week! We were so happy to see the kids and be able to be with a lot of them in person. We also continued to support a group of students at every grade level online and are keeping that connection strong.
Unfortunately we had 2 positive cases of COVID in our community this past week, one student and one staff member. They are both healing and doing well. Luckily neither of them had been back to school yet so this did not impact any groups and no one had to quarantine. We are working very hard to maintain the health protocols and keep all of our students and staff safe and healthy. We are hopeful that we will be able to continue in person learning, especially with a vaccine on the horizon. Please make sure your child does their health screen every morning and do NOT send them to school with any symptoms.
Our school day is currently 9:00am-3:00pm. Starting this Tuesday, January 19th, we will again charge families $1.00 per minute per child after 3:15pm. We do not have the capacity to care for multiple children after school hours. Please make arrangements to ensure that your child(ren) will be picked up everyday at 3:00pm.
A few of you have asked me about continuing to support our families and small businesses. If you are a family in need of food or any type of assistance, please reach out to Grant at Grant_VanPelt@dpsk12.org. Gracias por todo su apoyo y buenos deseos mientras volvemos al aprendizaje en persona. Agradecemos especialmente el almuerzo de todo el personal el miércoles que muchos de ustedes apoyaron. En general, ¡tuvimos una semana muy tranquila! Estábamos muy felices de ver a los niños y poder estar con muchos de ellos en persona. También continuamos apoyando en línea a un grupo de estudiantes en cada nivel de grado y mantenemos esa conexión fuerte.
Desafortunadamente, tuvimos 2 casos positivos de COVID en nuestra comunidad la semana pasada, un estudiante y un miembro del personal. Ambos se están curando y están bien. Afortunadamente, ninguno de ellos había regresado a la escuela todavía, por lo que esto no afectó a ningún grupo y nadie tuvo que ponerse en cuarentena. Estamos trabajando muy duro para mantener los protocolos de salud y mantener a todos nuestros estudiantes y personal seguros y saludables. Tenemos la esperanza de poder continuar el aprendizaje en persona, especialmente con una vacuna en el horizonte. Por favor asegúrese de que su hijo se haga un examen de salud todas las mañanas y NO lo envíe a la escuela con ningún síntoma.

Beginning next school year (2021-22), we will be transitioning 2nd grade to a platoon model, similar to what 3rd-5th grades are doing now. This means one teacher will teach literacy in Spanish and English and one teacher will teach math/science/social studies in Spanish and English. This helps us in better supporting students’ academic needs and will also enable us to support students in their language needs and growth as they transition from a 90/10 model in K and 1st grades. Unfortunately, this means that Mr. Matt will no longer be able to teach 2nd grade. We are really sad that this won’t work, as Matt has been a teacher at Valdez for many years and an amazing member of our community, supporting our students and families. We will miss him greatly.
We are fortunate to have someone in our community who is able to transition into the 2nd grade teaching role. Beth Greiner (currently teaching 3rd virtual and math intervention, previous Valdez 4th grade math teacher for many years) will be able to remain at Valdez and will be our new 2nd grade bilingual math/science/social studies teacher.
A partir del próximo año escolar (2021-22), estaremos haciendo la transición de segundo grado a un modelo de compartido, similar a lo que están haciendo ahora los grados tercero a quinto. Esto significa que un maestro enseñará alfabetización en español e inglés y un maestro enseñará matemáticas / ciencias / estudios sociales en español e inglés. Esto nos ayuda a brindar un mejor apoyo a las necesidades académicas de los estudiantes y también nos permitirá apoyar a los estudiantes en sus necesidades lingüísticas y su crecimiento a medida que pasan de un modelo 90/10 en los grados K y 1. Desafortunadamente, esto significa que el Sr. Matt ya no puede enseñar en segundo grado. Everyone entering the school, including students and staff, must engage in a daily health screen. All adults and students must show evidence of having completed and passed a symptom screening prior to entering the school. Symptom screening may be a home pre-screen or an in-person screen at the school by school staff and may include an on-site temperature check. Students/staff with a temperature of 100.4 or above will not be able to stay at school. Students should stay home if they are unwell and experiencing symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, abdominal pain, fatigue, muscle aches, and/or headache.
