We are excited to welcome more students back to in person learning and happy for the springtime and warm weather so we can spend more time outside! We are also pleased to share that we have not had an in person case of COVID at Valdez for a long period of time and hope to continue that trend. At this point over 95% of our staff have been vaccinated. We do have one student who is learning remotely who tested positive this past week. As this student is remote, this did not impact any of our cohorts. The student and family are doing well and recovering.
We will continue to communicate any cases directly with impacted classes and more generally weekly with the larger school. We have not shared any updates recently because we have not had any positive cases.
We have some schedule information for next school year, outlined below. We have not received cohorting guidance or information about families being in the school building again. We will share that information as soon as we receive it.
Our End of the Year Celebrations will look different this year based on the continued health guidelines. We are able to have an in person 5th grade Continuation ceremony, which we are very excited about. We may only have a very limited number of guests. This information will be communicated directly with 5th grade families. Unfortunately we cannot have families and outside guests attend celebrations at other grade levels, as we are very restricted on who can come into the building and be on school property. Thank you for your support and understanding as we are working hard to keep all kids healthy.
Día del Niño, or children’s day, is an annual celebration held on April 30th. It’s a day when children should feel special. Usually Mexico and other Latin countries will host festivals, music shows, magicians, special events with clowns and more for children on this day. At Valdez, we have traditionally hosted a special event and given all students a treat. This year, the culture and equity committee and PTO are sponsoring individual treat bags for each child that will be sent home.
We will have grade level “Field Days” outside at the end of May. We cannot have families attend but are happy to still give kids the experience and event. More information to follow.

¡Estamos emocionados de dar la bienvenida a más estudiantes al aprendizaje en persona y felices por la primavera y el clima cálido para que podamos pasar más tiempo al aire libre! También nos complace compartir que no hemos tenido un caso de COVID en persona en Valdez durante un largo período de tiempo y esperamos continuar esa tendencia. En este momento, más del 95% de nuestro personal ha sido vacunado. Tenemos un estudiante que está aprendiendo de forma remota que salio positivo con COVID la semana pasada. Como este estudiante es remoto, esto no afectó a ninguna de nuestras cohortes. El estudiante y la familia están bien y se están recuperando.
Continuaremos comunicando cualquier caso directamente con las clases afectadas y, en general, semanalmente con la escuela más grande. No hemos compartido ninguna actualización recientemente porque no hemos tenido casos positivos.
Tenemos información sobre el horario para el próximo año escolar, que se describe a continuación abajo. No hemos recibido orientación información sobre los cohortes y ni sobre si las familias pueden volver a estar en el edificio de la escuela. Compartiremos esa información tan pronto como la recibamos.
Nuestras celebraciones de fin de año se verán diferentes este año según las pautas de salud continuas. Estamos muy emocionados que podemos tener una ceremonia de continuación en persona de 5º grado. Solamente podemos tener un número muy limitado de invitados. Esta información se comunicará directamente con las familias de quinto grado. Lamentablemente, no podemos permitir que las familias y los invitados externos asistan a las celebraciones en otros niveles de grado, ya que estamos muy restringidos en cuanto a quién puede entrar al edificio y estar en la propiedad de la escuela. Gracias por su apoyo y comprensión, ya que estamos trabajando arduamente para mantener saludables a todos los niños.
El día del niño es una celebración anual que se lleva a cabo el 30 de abril. Es un día en el que los niños deben sentirse especiales. Generalmente en México y otros países latinos se realizarán festivales, shows musicales, magos, eventos especiales con payasos y más para niños en este día. En Valdez, tradicionalmente hemos organizado un evento especial y le hemos dado un regalo a todos los estudiantes. Este año, el comité de cultura y equidad y el PTO están patrocinando bolsas de regalitos individuales para cada niño que se enviará a casa.
Tendremos “Días de campo” de nivel de grado afuera a fines de mayo. No podemos permitir que las familias asistan, pero estamos felices de brindarles a los niños la experiencia y el evento. Más información a seguir.

This schedule is new for 2021-22. We are hoping we will be able to open up the playground before school for students to play and open the cafeteria for breakfast. We will share this information as soon as we can.
Here is additional information from DPS regarding the change in bell times:
Beginning in the 2021-22 school year, DPS will begin using a three-tier system for bell times.
This means most schools will start their day during one of three windows: 7:30-7:40 a.m., 8:05-8:25 a.m. or 8:50-9:10 a.m. With this change, most schools will be implementing new start and end times. The new tiered bell time system will help provide a better experience for our families and maximize learning for students with more consistent service.

We’re reminding everyone to help students wear a school uniform every day (including Friday). Valdez staff will work together to remind students of this expectation, especially now that we’re getting closer to the end of the school year when some students need extra reminders.
Valdez requires the following uniform for ALL students:

Have you seen the new segment “¿Quiénes son los cuidadores en Valdez?” in the Powerful Newscast? This is a video project started by the Culture and Equity Committee aiming to build connections among the Valdez community through short videos created by Valdez families sharing how they spend their time during the day. We want to include a video in the Powerful News each week so that our students, staff, and fellow families learn more about the people that make up our community. To do that, we need your help.
We would love for you to contribute 1 minute videos in either English or Spanish. You can sign up here or email Jenn Pressman at Jennifer_Pressman@dpsk12.net. Please keep in mind that the goal is to give an equitable representation of our community, celebrating everything from stay-at-home parents to lawyers to plumbers to restaurant workers as equally valuable.
