Happy New Year! We are excited to be back in school and glad we’ve been able to maintain in person learning. We have several staff and students who have tested positive for COVID and have been isolating. Per the current protocol, you will receive direct notification if your child has had close contact/ is in the same classroom as the positive case. Most of our current cases occurred over break and the individuals had not yet been at school.
As you may have heard, the CDC recently announced new guidance for how long to isolate or quarantine if a person tests positive or is exposed to COVID-19. DPS will be following this guidance going forward.
We are working hard to maintain in person learning. This week at Valdez, we have had leadership, teachers, and paraprofessionals out due to COVID. We still have an extreme substitute teacher shortage. We have been able to shift staff and cover absences (see information below if you are interested in becoming a substitute teacher). We are hoping we will be able to continue to make these shifts. There may be a point in time when we need to temporarily shift to remote learning. We will only use this as a last resort, because we know how hard it is on families to shift to a remote day on short notice.
If your child is showing any symptoms, please keep them home. Our school nurse and/or health technician are here Monday-Friday. Please inform us should your child test positive and reach out with any questions.

We will resume Coffee with the Principal via Zoom on the first Friday in February. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming PTO meeting next week (information below).

¡Feliz año nuevo! Estamos emocionados de estar de vuelta en la escuela y contentos de haber podido mantener el aprendizaje en persona. Tenemos varios miembros del personal y estudiantes que dieron positivo por COVID y se han estado aislando. Según el protocolo actual, recibirá una notificación directa si su hijo/a ha tenido contacto cercano/está en el mismo salón de clases que el caso positivo. La mayoría de nuestros casos actuales ocurrieron durante las vacaciones y los individuos aún no habían ido a la escuela.
Como habrá escuchado, los CDC anunciaron recientemente una nueva guía sobre cuánto tiempo aislar o poner en cuarentena si una persona da positivo o está expuesta a COVID-19. DPS seguirá esta guía en el futuro.
Estamos trabajando duro para mantener el aprendizaje en persona. Esta semana en Valdez, hemos tenido falta de liderazgo, maestras y paraprofesionales debido a COVID. Todavía tenemos una escasez extrema de maestros sustitutos. Hemos podido cambiar el personal y cubrir las ausencias (consulte la información a continuación si está interesado en convertirse en maestro sustituto). Esperamos poder continuar haciendo estos cambios. Puede haber un momento en el que necesitemos cambiar temporalmente al aprendizaje remoto. Solo usaremos esto como último recurso, porque sabemos lo difícil que es para las familias cambiar a un día remoto con poca antelación.

A class liaison facilitates communication between parents and the teacher, school administration, and/or parent-teacher organization (PTO), and supports the teacher in needs that may arise. COVID-19 Vaccinations Now Available for Children 5 and Older
Everyone ages 5 and older is now eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Please talk with your healthcare provider and consider having your children vaccinated against COVID-19.
