Monday, October 31st
K-5th grades:
ECE:
K-5th grade students need to bring their costumes in a bag to change into in the afternoon. ECE students can wear their costumes in the morning. No scary costumes or masks, blood, or weapons. Please remember we have young children who will see the Halloween parade.
We will start the Halloween parade in the building and invite all families to join us out in the back to view the parade and then come inside the cafetorium for songs by K-5th grades and our Aplausos choir.
There will be other, planned activities during this time for students who do not celebrate Halloween.
Dia de los Muertos
After dismissal on 10/31, families are invited to come in afterschool to walk through the atrium, look at the display and art show, and pick up a Dia de los Muertos goody bag for students. Given this is the day of Halloween, there will not be other planned activities after school, except for Enrichment classes. There will be regularly scheduled enrichment classes on this day. All students must be with an adult at all times, students may not come through alone.

Valdez Conference Week is October 31st-November 4th. Our teachers are staying late this week to meet with families. Let’s give them some food and treats to support their extra work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Enrichment classes will take place as scheduled on Halloween. At dismissal on Oct 31, students in Monday classes will be sent to the auditorium as usual.

The program Nature Health Workers is working to improve the tree canopy in our neighborhood, improving the environmental health conditions for our residents and particularly our children. Our commitment is to plant more than 1,000 trees in Denver’s most environmentally vulnerable neighborhoods over the next three years.

Let’s celebrate diversity! Escuela Valdez has many students with different physical, mental, emotional and learning needs, as well as caring teachers and therapists who help address these needs to allow students reach their full potential. For the next several weeks, the Powerful News would like to highlight a staff member from Valdez’s Intervention, Special Education and Therapy teams. We are excited to celebrate all the hard work these staff members do to help all Valdez students achieve success.
This week we are introducing Valdez’s Teacher Leader and Literacy Intervention Teacher, Katie Shively.
What is your name? Ms. Katie (Shively)
How long have you worked at Valdez/DPS? I think 13 years but I’ve lost count. I have worked at DPS 17+ years, but have also lost count.
How do you help students at Valdez? Half of my job is the Teacher Leader for 3-5 Literacy, so I connect some with all 3rd through 5th grade kids about Literacy. I try to know something about each of them – siblings, personality, how they engage in class, and I know their literacy data at least 4 times a year. The other half of my job is literacy intervention in either English or Spanish for grades 3-5. We work on whichever part or parts of reading or writing is challenging for students that are farther below grade level. It may be phonics, reading or writing fluency, understanding what they read or writing about what they read.
What are your interests outside of school? Talking or other activities with my 2 teenagers whenever they will do it 😉 walk and talk with my husband or friends, yoga, travel
What is something that you really love about your job? I love when struggling readers or writers see how much they can do and apply strategies that help them.

¿Cuánto tiempo ha trabajado en Valdez/DPS? Creo que 13 años pero he perdido la cuenta. He trabajado en DPS más de 17 años, pero también he perdido la cuenta.
¿Cómo ayuda a los estudiantes de Valdez? La mitad de mi trabajo es el de maestro líder de alfabetización de 3 a 5 años, por lo que me conecto con todos los niños de 3.° a 5.° grado sobre alfabetización. Trato de saber algo sobre cada uno de ellos: hermanos, personalidad, cómo se involucran en clase y conozco sus datos de alfabetización al menos 4 veces al año. La otra mitad de mi trabajo es la intervención de alfabetización en inglés o español para los grados 3-5. Trabajamos en cualquier parte o partes de lectura o escritura que sea un reto para los estudiantes que están más por debajo del nivel de grado. Puede ser fonética, fluidez de lectura o escritura, comprensión de lo que leen o escritura sobre lo que leen.
¿Cuáles son tus intereses fuera de la escuela? Hablar u otras actividades con mis 2 adolescentes cada vez que lo hagan 😉 caminar y hablar con mi esposo o amigos, yoga, viajar.
¿Qué es algo que realmente amas de tu trabajo? Me encanta cuando los lectores o escritores con dificultades ven cuánto pueden hacer y aplican estrategias que los ayudan.
