After Thanksgiving break, students will return to their normal pickup schedules.
We want to thank our instructors, Valdez families, volunteers, and school staff and administration for all your support and enthusiasm. We couldn’t do this without you!
Enrichment will return next semester, with a mix of classes new and returning! Please reach out to MC (303.587.1686 / marycatherine.platt@gmail.com) if you’re interested in teaching next session. Classes will run Feb 27 – April 28; look for registration packets in early February.

Please save the date of 12/8 for our Valdez Tamalada fundraiser! We’ll be leading a class (for adults and kids) on how to make several types of tamales. You will go home with a bag of them! There will be a class at 3:30pm and another at 5pm. Sign up HERE! Tamales will also be available for pick-up between 3:15-6:30 for those that can’t attend the class.

Colorado weather can be unpredictable. Our students will play outside as much as possible this year, even when it is cold. Please make sure your child has a warm jacket, hat and gloves for cold weather.

Let’s celebrate diversity! Escuela Valdez has many students with different physical, mental, emotional and learning needs, as well as caring teachers and therapists who help address these needs to allow students reach their full potential. For the next several weeks, the Powerful News would like to highlight a staff member from Valdez’s Intervention, Special Education and Therapy teams. We are excited to celebrate all the hard work these staff members do to help all Valdez students achieve success.
This week we are introducing Valdez’s Math Intervention Teacher, Sara Tomasikiewicz.
What is your name? Sara Tomasikiewicz (tomas-kev-itch)
How long have you worked at Valdez/DPS? I began working in DPS in 2014, however, this is only my first year working at Escuela Valdez!
How do you help students at Valdez? At Valdez, I work with many different students in helping them in math!
What are your interests outside of school? Outside of school, I am a big outdoorsy person! My husband and I hike, backpack, camp, rock climb, and kayak. During the holidays, I spend time with my family who are either in Phoenix, AZ or on the East Coast!
What is something that you really love about your job? Something that I really love about my job is watching students grow in their confidence in math. I am so proud of students when I see them demonstrating their learning! I love playing math games with students and seeing them apply their learning!
What is something that you wished people knew about neurodivergent/special needs students? Students learn in different ways and at different paces. It’s important to show patience with neurodiverse/special needs students and help build their confidence!
How can the community support you/your team/neurodivergent students better? It is so important that caregivers and other important people in a child’s life don’t say things like “I am bad at math” or “I was bad at math as a kid too” or “I’m not a math person”. Instead, praise children for their strategies and effort. A part of a students’ success in math is related to having a growth mindset. It is important that they believe with hard work, practice, and effort, in time, they will understand stronger.

Escuela Valdez tiene muchos estudiantes con diferentes necesidades físicas, mentales, emocionales y de aprendizaje, así como maestros y terapeutas atentos que ayudan a abordar estas necesidades para permitir que los estudiantes alcancen su máximo potencial. Durante las próximas semanas, Powerful News quisiera destacar a un miembro del personal de los equipos de Intervención, Educación Especial y Terapia de Valdez. Algo que realmente me encanta de mi trabajo es ver cómo los estudiantes aumentan su confianza en las matemáticas. ¡Estoy tan orgulloso de los estudiantes cuando los veo demostrar su aprendizaje! ¡Me encanta jugar juegos de matemáticas con los estudiantes y verlos aplicar su aprendizaje!
¿Qué es algo que desearías que la gente supiera sobre los estudiantes neurodivergentes/con necesidades especiales? Los estudiantes aprenden de diferentes maneras ya diferentes ritmos. ¡Es importante mostrar paciencia con los estudiantes neurodiversos/con necesidades especiales y ayudarlos a desarrollar su confianza!
¿Cómo puede la comunidad brindarle un mejor apoyo a usted, a su equipo o a los estudiantes neurodivergentes? Es muy importante que los cuidadores y otras personas importantes en la vida de un niño no digan cosas como “Soy malo en matemáticas” o “Yo también era malo en matemáticas cuando era niño” o “No soy una persona matemática”. En su lugar, elogie a los niños por sus estrategias y esfuerzos. Una parte del éxito de los estudiantes en matemáticas está relacionada con tener una mentalidad de crecimiento. Es importante que crean que con trabajo duro, práctica y esfuerzo, con el tiempo, entenderán más fuerte.
