Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history.
President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society—from activists and civil rights pioneers such as Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture and more.

We are thrilled to present this opportunity for our Valdez families. Our students have been invited to watch the amazing MSU Basketball team during their game on Friday, Feb 17th. Students will have the opportunity to greet the players, tour the locker rooms, and be recognized as honorary guests for the night. We want all of our kids to have an opportunity to join us.
If you’re interested, please enter your child’s name on this form. Additionally, indicate if you would like/need to carpool with other families. We will gather in the Valdez parking lot for those families who need a ride or those who can give others a ride with them to the game. The game starts at 7:00 pm. and ends at 9:00 pm. We will meet in the parking lot at 6:00 pm and will return right after the game is over. The exact location for this game is at Auraria Event Center (1255 10th St Plaza, Denver, CO 80204).

Register now for the Girls are SMART (Studious, Mighty, Amazing, Resilient, and Talented) conference hosted by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) collegiate section at Colorado School of Mines!
This event involves gathering girls in grades 1st-5th on the Mines campus to do science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) activities and explore what it means to be an engineer and scientist. This year, Girls are SMART will take place on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, in the Ben H. Parker Student Center Ballrooms from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Seven, interactive activity rotations will present an opportunity to create a simple and unique art project that demonstrates STEM concepts. A variety of topics will be covered related to many of the disciplines studied at Mines! At Girls are SMART, students will:

The DPS SchoolChoice open enrollment window for the 2023-24 school year is Jan. 13 – Feb. 14, 2023. Incoming ECE, kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students need to apply to guarantee a spot in your preferred school. Current ECE-3 students** at Valdez going into ECE-4 for 2023-24 need to complete the SchoolChoice application and select Valdez as your school of choice to hold your current spot. Current ECE-4 and K-4th students staying at Valdez for 2023-24 do not need to fill out an application.
Any new student or sibling who wishes to apply for the 2023-2024 school year will need to complete a SchoolChoice application by February 14, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. Rank your preferred schools (up to 12) using the online SchoolChoice application. Create an account or sign in using your Parent Portal username and password.
CHANGES to SchoolChoice:
The State of Colorado’s new Universal Preschool (UPK) has brought about some changes with the DPS SchoolChoice process for ECE-3 and ECE-4. **Incoming ECE-3s and ECE-4s, as well as current ECE-3s continuing to ECE-4 next school year will need to complete a UPK application in addition to the SchoolChoice application.
For more information, please read the letter to families from The DPS Department of Early Education. DPS has also created a website for families. Families with questions about the UPK program should check out the Universal Preschool (UPK) Colorado website.
You can always get the latest information on the SchoolChoice website. If you need additional help or have questions, start by contacting the SchoolChoice hotline at 720-423-3493, emailing schoolchoice@dpsk12.org or contacting the Valdez main office.
