We will have pizza available for sale, hot chocolate, sugar skull decorating, and a concert featuring all 2nd graders, all 5th graders, and our choir, Aplausos. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a festival celebrated between October 31st and November 2nd. This holiday is celebrated in Mexico, parts of Central and South America, and increasingly throughout the United States. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe, and similar themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African communities.
Day of the Dead is not a sad or scary occasion, but a spirited holiday when people remember and honor family members who have died. All of this is part of the philosophy that death is not something to be feared, but a natural part of life. It is a loving ritual full of joy, celebration, and remembrance.
People celebrate in their homes, creating altars that display portraits, favorite foods, and special possessions of their loved ones. Altars are also decorated with candles and marigolds. Families also visit the graves of their loved ones, cleaning the headstones, decorating with flowers, bringing food, and making music.
At Escuela Valdez, we celebrate this festive occasion as a community with an altar in our atrium. All are welcome and encouraged to bring a photo of your loved one and place it on the altar. We also celebrate it with a special event!

Día de los Muertos es una celebración entre el 31 de octubre y 2 de noviembre. Esta fiesta se celebra en México, partes de América Central y del Sur, y cada vez más en los Estados Unidos. Observancias similares ocurren en otras partes de Europa, y las celebraciones temáticas similares aparecen en muchas comunidades de Asia y África.
Día de los Muertos no es una ocasión triste, es un día cuando la gente recuerda y honra miembros de la familia que han muerto. Todo esto es parte de la filosofía de que la muerte no es algo para ser temido, sino una parte natural de la vida. Es un ritual amoroso lleno de alegría y recuerdo.
La gente celebra en sus hogares, con la creación de altares o ofrendas, con retratos, comidas favoritas y posesiones especiales de sus seres queridos. Altares también están decoradas con velas y caléndulas. Las familias también visitan las tumbas de sus seres queridos para limpiar de las lápidas, decorar con flores, traer comida, y tocar música.

This year, DPS is implementing (and requiring) the BASC-3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System, otherwise known as the BESS screener, in every school across the district. The BESS screens a wide array of behaviors that help to identify strengths and areas of concern including internalizing, externalizing, and school behaviors as well as adaptive skills and can assist in identifying any areas that may be interfering with a student’s academic or social success.
Please complete this quick (5 minute) survey to provide valuable input on your student’s mental health and social emotional well being. You only need your child’s DPS ID (lunch number) and date of birth. If you do not know your child’s lunch number, it can be found on Infinite Campus or given to you by your child’s teacher. Valdez was recently awarded a grant from the Denver Public Schools Foundation to support the purchase of Raz-Kids and Lexia licenses which will impact the learning experience of our students and promote the whole child by helping students level up to better reading in a fun and interactive way. Thank you to Ms. Meza for applying! This award came from the Denver Public Schools Foundation’s A to Z Grant Program, which funds materials, resources and opportunities that fall outside classroom budgets, and have a lasting impact on students. The A to Z Grant has funded more than $2.95 million to schools in DPS since the program’s inception in 2006. You can learn more about DPS Foundation and support the A to Z Grants on their website.
The A to Z Fund is funded through collective donations made to the DPS Foundation from organizations, companies, individuals and foundations. Every dollar makes a difference in the support of our educators and students.

Wednesday was National Walk/Roll to School Day, and Valdez had nearly 60 students arrive to school via bike, scooter, skateboard, or on foot! Thanks to our celebrity crossing guard, Denver City Councilwoman Flor Alvidrez, for helping us greet students and hand out raffle tickets. Students who used human-powered transportation were entered into a raffle to win lunch with the principal. Two students’ names were drawn, and Mina James and Caroline Bergner enjoyed a yummy lunch from Snarf’s with Principal Buckley today.

El miércoles fue el Día Nacional para Ir a la Escuela a Pie or Sobre Ruedas, ¡y Valdez hizo que casi 60 estudiantes llegaran a la escuela en bicicleta, scooter, patineta o a pie! Gracias a nuestra famosa guardia de cruce, la Concejal de la ciudad de Denver, Flor Alvidrez, por ayudarnos a saludar a los estudiantes y repartir boletos para la rifa. Los estudiantes que utilizaron transporte impulsado por humanos participaron en una rifa para ganar un almuerzo con el director. DenCoKid is hosting a FREE Experience Dyslexia Simulation experience
to families, educators and the community.

This empathy-building simulation allows participants to experience some of the challenges and frustrations faced by people with attention and language-based learning differences. Participants are guided through six learning tasks commonly encountered in the classroom or workplace. It is the perfect time of year for those family pictures! Leaves are changing & weather is perfect for them!
We are offering mini photoshoots at our Valdez Community Garden! (Did you know our school has its own community garden? It’s right next to the parking lot.)
We are offering these pictures with the “pay what you can model” with a suggested donation of $50. We want to make this opportunity accessible for all! (if you are able to pay more, please do!)
We are able to accommodate 4 families in an hour, so sessions will last 15 minutes. Please come dressed for them, there are no outfit changes. All profit will go to the school. Thanks to our amazing photographer Maria Pardo who will be donating her time and talent!
