DPS Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero and the DPS leadership cabinet visited Valdez on Monday morning. We spent time reflecting on this year and discussing plans for next year. We were able to highlight several of our celebrations as well as share our challenges with receiving large numbers of new students this year. We again advocated for all of our funding for next school year to remain in our school budget for the year even if we start the school year with decreased numbers. We also again asked that the system shift in how DPS places newcomer students in schools and that all of the schools in the same geographical area should have to support students.
Overall the response was positive and we had a pro-active conversation about how all students will be better supported from the start of next school year. We were told that Valdez would not have to cut staff in September and the district will protect the positions we have to support newcomer students. They also shared they are working on a more comprehensive plan to address how to place newcomer students.
Dr. Marrero also visited Ms. Fabi in her classroom to congratulate her for her award at the DPS Gala last week. We love you Ms. Fabi!
I am hopeful for the future and will continue to advocate for all of our students at Valdez. I left our time together feeling heard and will keep the leadership team true to their promises for next school year.

El superintendente del DPS, Dr. Alex Marrero, y el liderazgo del DPS visitaron a Valdez el lunes por la mañana. Pasamos tiempo reflexionando sobre este año y discutiendo planes para el próximo. Pudimos resaltar varias de nuestras celebraciones este año y compartir nuestros desafíos al recibir una gran cantidad de nuevos estudiantes este año. Nuevamente abogamos por que todos nuestros fondos para el próximo año escolar permanezcan en nuestro presupuesto escolar para el año, incluso si comenzamos el año escolar con números reducidos. También pedimos nuevamente que el sistema cambie la forma en que DPS ubica a los estudiantes recién llegados en las escuelas y que todas las escuelas en la misma área geográfica deberían tener que apoyar a los estudiantes.
En general, la respuesta fue positiva y tuvimos una conversación proactiva sobre cómo todos los estudiantes recibirán un mejor apoyo desde el comienzo del próximo año escolar. Nos dijeron que Valdez no tendría que recortar personal en septiembre y que el distrito protegerá los puestos que tenemos para apoyar a los estudiantes recién llegados. También compartieron que están trabajando en un plan más integral para abordar cómo ubicar a los estudiantes recién llegados.
Dr. Marrero también visitó a la Sra. Fabi en su salón de clases para felicitarla por su premio en la Gala de DPS la semana pasada. ¡La amamos Sra. Fabi!
Tengo esperanzas en el futuro y continuaré abogando por todos nuestros estudiantes en Valdez. Dejé nuestro tiempo juntos sintiéndome escuchado y mantendré al equipo de liderazgo fiel a sus promesas para el próximo año escolar.

On Thursday, April 11th at the 2024 Achieve Gala, the DPS Foundation presented Valdez teacher, Fabiola Lozada, with the Educator of the Year award! This year’s award recognized an impactful educator from a DPS school that has been highly affected by new-to-country students and families. Ms. Faby was selected from among the nominees to receive this honor. Principal Buckley and a group of Valdez staff attended the gala to celebrate Ms. Faby. Watch a video from the gala!

Dear Valdez Family/Staff,
I am writing to let you know that next year I will start my journey at a different school. I have enjoyed my time working here at Valdez. This is where I learned to be a teacher and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with such strong and caring teachers. I have put a lot of thought into this decision because I love and value Valdez. I am moving to a school that is closer to home and closer to where my husband and I will be moving to in the future.
I am very lucky to have found such an amazing school where I got to spend the past 4 years. I have learned a lot about myself and how to be a powerful teacher for my students. Thank you so much for all your support and guidance and I will make sure to stay in contact.

Valdez Vision and Hearing Screenings
Valdez Elementary is conducting school wide vision and hearing screenings on Monday 4/29, Tuesday 4/30, and Wednesday 5/1. Please have your student present on these days. You must email the school nurse at renee_cesario@dpsk12.net if you would NOT like your student to participate. Otherwise all students will be screened.
Immunization Clinic at Valdez
Mark your calendars! We will be having another on-site immunization clinic at Valdez on Monday, May 6 and Tuesday, May 7. Consent forms will be sent out sometime in the next two weeks.

The CO Virtual TPS Project helps eligible people secure Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Employment Authorization Documents (EAD), which enable them to work legally and remain in the US temporarily without threat of removal. You can learn more about the project here.
This project, supported by the Rose Community Foundation, state and federal agencies, and other nonprofits and legal providers, provides free immigration services to migrants from Venezuela and other eligible countries. As a part of the project, clients attend Signing Days, where they review application materials and, with support from USCIS, complete their biometric documentation and file their applications in an expedited manner.

Kinder and 4th grade will be performing, all students will sing one song together during this Valdez tradition that celebrates all the women in our community. There will be student speakers from each class. Please plan to drop off your student for line up with their class in the morning as usual and then proceed to the auditorium to be seated for the concert.
