We have had another great week of in person learning! Unfortunately, we are sad to share that we do have a confirmed case of COVID in first grade. All impacted families have been notified and all of first grade will be remote learning until Monday, February 1st. Thank you for keeping your kids home when they are sick and for supporting us in all of the health protocols. It is making a difference and we have been able to reduce the risk.
We miss having families in our building and miss being able to connect casually with you all. We appreciate your support and compassion for our teachers and staff during this time as they are working extra hard to keep all areas sanitized, support students in social distancing and keeping masks on, and above all, feel comfortable in classrooms happy and learning. We also appreciate all of the work going into the balancing act of teaching students in person and some students virtually. All of our students are engaged and learning–and we continue to take great strides to make sure kids are here, make sure kids are logging in, and to make sure our families are getting what they need. It truly does take a village and all of your support does not go unnoticed.

¡Hemos tenido otra gran semana de aprendizaje en persona! Desafortunadamente, nos entristece compartir que tenemos un caso confirmado de COVID en primer grado. Todas las familias afectadas han sido notificadas y todas las de primer grado serán de aprendizaje remoto hasta el lunes 1 de febrero. Gracias por mantener a sus hijos en casa cuando están enfermos y por apoyarnos en todos los protocolos de salud. Se hace la diferencia y hemos podido reducir el riesgo.
Extrañamos tener familias en nuestro edificio y extrañamos poder conectarnos casualmente con todos ustedes. Agradecemos su apoyo y compasión por nuestros maestros y personal durante este tiempo, ya que están trabajando más duro para mantener todas las áreas desinfectadas, apoyar a los estudiantes en el distanciamiento social, mantener las máscaras y, sobre todo, sentirse cómodos en las aulas felices y aprendiendo. También apreciamos todo el trabajo realizado en el acto de equilibrio de enseñar a los estudiantes en persona y a algunos estudiantes virtualmente. If your child is attending school in person and is sick and cannot come to school, they cannot simply join virtual learning in grades K-5th for a day or two. In most grade levels, a separate teacher is teaching the remote learners and they may not be on the same lesson as the in person learners (even though they are learning the same content). The teacher may not know your child and it is very disruptive to have extra students join for a day or two.
In the case where your child has to quarantine due to a COVID exposure and will be absent for several days, we can have your child join the virtual online group for that period of time. Please contact the grade level teachers and school administration to make these arrangements.
If your child is sick, s/he must be free of any symptoms for 24 hours in order to return to school, even if s/he has tested negative for COVID. Please communicate all absences with the teachers and front office and check in with the school nurse if you have any questions.

Si su hijo asiste a la escuela en persona y está enfermo y no puede asistir a la escuela, no puede simplemente unirse al aprendizaje virtual para los grados K-5o durante uno o dos días. Individual Student Picture Day for in-person and virtual learners is Tuesday, January 26th. In-person students will have their pictures taken during the school day. Virtual learners will have the opportunity to get their photos taken from 3:30-5:00 p.m. that day. They may line up outside the cafeteria door on the south side of the building. Remember to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart.
Students may choose their wardrobe on this special day. Please encourage them to dress for success, keeping in mind that they are role models. Please send your photo order envelope with your student on Tuesday.

The 2021-2022 SchoolChoice applications are now available on the SchoolChoice website or through Parent Portal. Any new student or sibling who wishes to apply for the 2021-2022 school year will need to complete an application by February 16th at 4:00 p.m. Visit the Choice & Enrollment website for more information about the DPS Choice process.
All parents of current ECE 3- and ECE 4-year-olds need to complete an application. Current ECE 3- and ECE 4-year-old students at Valdez will automatically get a spot for next year, but you still need to fill out a 2021-2022 application online.
Active Kinder-4th grade students will automatically have a seat for the 2021-2022 school year.

Beginning next school year (2021-22), we will be transitioning 2nd grade to a platoon model, similar to what 3rd-5th grades are doing now. This means one teacher will teach literacy in Spanish and English and one teacher will teach math/science/social studies in Spanish and English. This helps us in better supporting students’ academic needs and will also enable us to support students in their language needs and growth as they transition from a 90/10 model in K and 1st grades. Unfortunately, this means that Mr. Matt will no longer be able to teach 2nd grade. We are really sad that this won’t work, as Matt has been a teacher at Valdez for many years and an amazing member of our community, supporting our students and families. We will miss him greatly.
We are fortunate to have someone in our community who is able to transition into the 2nd grade teaching role. Beth Greiner (currently teaching 3rd virtual and math intervention, previous Valdez 4th grade math teacher for many years) will be able to remain at Valdez and will be our new 2nd grade bilingual math/science/social studies teacher.

Everyone entering the school, including students and staff, must engage in a daily health screen. All adults and students must show evidence of having completed and passed a symptom screening prior to entering the school. Symptom screening may be a home pre-screen or an in-person screen at the school by school staff and may include an on-site temperature check. Students/staff with a temperature of 100.4 or above will not be able to stay at school. Students should stay home if they are unwell and experiencing symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, abdominal pain, fatigue, muscle aches, and/or headache.
