In the United States, 1 in 5 people have learning and thinking differences, such as dyslexia and ADHD. Learning and thinking differences are variations in how the brain processes information and can affect reading, writing, math, focus, self control, or following directions. Learning and thinking differences aren’t related to intelligence and with the right tools and support, people who learn and think differently will have a greater ability and opportunity to thrive.
Come join us virtually for an evening with four members of Valdez’s student support staff: Mr. Grant, Ms. Shelley, Ms. Fabi and Ms. Sasha. They will discuss different kinds of learning needs students have at Valdez, how the teachers and staff work with these students, how we as a community can support and advocate for these students, and what to do if you are worried your child might have a learning or thinking difference.
There will be time for a question and answer session. English and Spanish translation will be available. The meeting will also be recorded for families unable to join live. We look forward to seeing you there!

This winter our amazing Escuela Valdez Artists created many creative and reflective pieces of art. These pieces reflect on their beliefs, as well as their understanding of the changes going on around us. I am amazed on their ability to look at the world around them and through it all keep persevering and grow both as individuals and artists.

The climate and culture committee at Valdez is carrying out a community survey about how included and welcome families feel at Valdez. We would love to get feedback from as many families as possible. We are including the survey link here, which should work on your phone. We will also have paper copies available to fill out before and after pickup on select days next week. Have you seen the new segment “¿Quiénes son los cuidadores en Valdez?” in the Powerful Newscast? This is a video project started by the Culture and Equity Committee aiming to build connections among the Valdez community through short videos created by Valdez families sharing how they spend their time during the day. We want to include a video in the Powerful News each week so that our students, staff, and fellow families learn more about the people that make up our community. To do that, we need your help.
We would love for you to contribute 1 minute videos in either English or Spanish. You can sign up here or email Jenn Pressman at Jennifer_Pressman@dpsk12.net. You can view previous videos and save your own video here. Please keep in mind that the goal is to give an equitable representation of our community, celebrating everything from stay-at-home parents to lawyers to plumbers to restaurant workers as equally valuable.
