Lunar New Year is the beginning of a new year based on the lunar (or lunisolar) calendar. This year Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, February 10th (today!). Celebrations last up to 16 days; this year’s celebrations culminate with a Lantern Festival on February 24th.
The year 2024 celebrates the year of the dragon, which symbolizes power, good fortune and strength. Famous people born in the year of the dragon include Martin Luther King, Jr., Vladimir Putin, Michelle Obama, John Lennon, Adele, Frankie Jonas, Reese Witherspoon, Rihanna, and Bruce Lee.

The DPS SchoolChoice open enrollment window for the 2024-25 school year closes Monday, Feb. 12, 2024 at 4:00pm. Incoming ECE, kindergarten, sixth- and ninth-grade students need to apply to guarantee a spot in your preferred school. Current ECE students at Valdez need to complete the application and select Valdez as your school of choice to hold your current spot. Current K-4th students staying at Valdez for 2024-25 do not need to fill out an application.
Any new student or sibling who wishes to apply for the 2024-2025 school year will need to complete an online application by February 12th at 4:00 p.m. Create an account or sign in using your Parent Portal username and password. You’ll be notified of your results in late March.

What is the enrichment program? Valdez offers weekly, hour-long classes after school for 8 weeks in fall and spring. Our mission is to provide every student in grades K-5 with opportunities to explore their talents and develop skills in sports, technology, the arts, and more. There’s a suggested optional contribution of $75 per assigned class, or whatever amount you’re able to pay, but no payment is required for participation.
We need volunteers, including a co-coordinator, to help sustain our program! Our committee is run entirely by parent volunteers, which allows us to offer a robust lineup of low-cost classes that could run $200+ apiece at other schools. We need your help to ensure students using district transportation have enough space to park. We have traffic cones to identify the space we need. As soon as students using district transportation leave, we will remove the cones to allow others to park. Therefore, we kindly ask that you help our staff by not parking there when you see the traffic cones.

Valdez has been awarded $100,000 under the School Determined Funds (SDF) from the 2020 Bond Quality Learning Environments category. Similar to Innovative Classrooms and Focused Investments in the 2016 Bond, this program provides funding to facilities for school-driven high-impact investments in key learning environment spaces. Schools have flexibility in implementation within guidelines for allowable investments in key learning environment spaces (classrooms, cafeterias, outdoor play areas, libraries/LMCs, flexible program spaces, gyms/fitness spaces, school gathering spaces, auditoriums). We are in the process of creating a committee of leaders, teachers, staff, and parents to determine how we use this bond money at Valdez. Dear Valdez community,
It has been my honor to be your music teacher the past three school years. I have learned so much about teaching, so much about myself, and have felt very supported by the admin team and families. I’m proud of the music program we’ve built together post-Covid, and I love each of our students dearly.
So it is with a heavy heart that I want to let you know that I will not be returning as Valdez’s music teacher next school year. I have realized that teaching half-time at Valdez in addition to my other jobs isn’t sustainable for me. This was not an easy decision to make. I have been reflecting for quite a long time about where I am in my career – my strongest skill sets, areas of passion, and work/life balance. This change is best for my own well-being and best for my family.
Choir is something I’m very passionate about, and I will be continuing as the director of the Aplausos de Colorado Children’s Chorale. I feel very thankful to be able to stay connected to the beautiful Valdez community in that way.
I will be working hard to help recruit a wonderful new music teacher for next year by spreading the word throughout all of my networks.
Thank you for discussing this news with your students over the next few days. I’ll be sharing about it with each class on Monday and Tuesday Feb 12-13.

Querida comunidad Valdez,
Ha sido un honor para mí ser su profesora de música durante los últimos tres años escolares. He aprendido mucho sobre la enseñanza, mucho sobre mí mismo, y me he sentido muy apoyado por el equipo administrativo y las familias. Estoy orgulloso del programa de música que hemos construido juntos después de Covid y amo mucho a cada uno de nuestros estudiantes.
Así que con gran pesar quiero hacerles saber que no regresaré como maestra de música de Valdez el próximo año escolar. Me he dado cuenta de que enseñar a tiempo parcial en Valdez además de mis otros trabajos no es sostenible para mí. Esta no fue una decisión fácil de tomar. He estado reflexionando durante bastante tiempo sobre dónde me encuentro en mi carrera: mis habilidades más fuertes, mis áreas de pasión y el equilibrio entre vida personal y laboral. Este cambio es mejor para mi propio bienestar y para mi familia.
El coro es algo que me apasiona mucho y continuaré como directora del Coro Aplausos de Colorado Children’s Chorale. Me siento muy agradecido de poder seguir conectado de esa manera con esta hermosa comunidad de Valdez.
Trabajaré duro para ayudar a reclutar un nuevo y maravilloso maestro de música para el próximo año, compartiendo esa oportunidad en todas mis redes.
